Today is December 16, International Roma Holocaust Day.
Let’s remember the Roma Holocaust (over 500,000 killed along with the 6,000,000 Jews) as a warning to stand up for the helpless. ‘As God has been merciful to us, we bear forth the image of this mercy to the world. We are called to “give justice to the weak and the fatherless; [to] maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; [and to] deliver them from the hand of the wicked” (Ps. 82:3–4).’ (Miles V. Van Pelt, “The Old Testament God of Compassion and Mercy”, TableTalk, Dec. 2010, p. 14)
As has been said, all that is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.
